How to Claim Your 10,000 Pesos Benefit From SSS When You Lose Your Job

It’s official: You can now claim unemployment assistance from SSS if you lose your job. This law was signed by President Rodrigo Duterte and authored by Senator Richard Gordon under the Republic Act 11199 Security Act of 2019 last February.

How to Avail the Unemployment assistance of SSS?

The new unemployment assistance law or the Tulong Trabaho Act provides assistance to employees that have just lost their job and needs financial aid. In this way, they don’t need to worry about their basic needs as they find new job opportunities. This includes two-month financial assistance of 10,000 pesos each month.

The great thing about this benefit is that it’s not a loan but sort of insurance. This means that you don’t have to pay for it in the future. It is purely a benefit that you can enjoy for 60 days.

According to the RA, a person who is involuntarily unemployed may claim up to 50% of their average monthly salary credit for up to two months. However, the member must be not over 60 years old and has contributed and a member of SSS for at least 36 months. In addition, twelve months of it must have been contributed at 18 months before losing the job.

This means that if you have lost your job in the last 8 months but your employer is consistently remitting your SSS contributions in a timely manner, you are qualified for this benefit. Just note that every SSS member can only claim this benefit once every three years.

Who is Qualified to avail this Benefit?

Unfortunately, not everyone who lost their job can avail the benefit. It is limited to individuals who got unemployed due to a merger, bankruptcy, and reorganization of their company. Individuals who voluntary resigned from work will not be able to avail of this benefit.

Gordon says this benefit is not to encourage individuals to depend on the benefit. Its more of an aid to make it easier for a person to focus on finding a new career without the need to worry about personal expenses. This is why the unemployment benefit can only be claimed for a maximum of two months.
