PLDT Promises to Improve 100 Mbps Internet Coverage by 2018 After Pres. Duterte’s Request for Improvement
In a press event last October 25, 2017, PLDT has promised to improve the data experience and coverage by 2018. The company said its 100 Mbps internet service will be made available to 90% of the Philippines. This means improved internet not just in Metro Manila but all the way to Visayas and Mindanao. It looks like change is really coming in the Philippines, all thanks to our beloved President Duterte.
This news came after President Duterte request to telecommunications company to improve service or he would allow the entry of foreign companies. Coincidentally, the announcement also came just after Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, said internet speed in the country was “no good”. And this isn’t surprising as the Philippines is currently ranked as one of the countries with the lowest internet speed in the world.
According to ABS CBN news, Philippines was in the 99th position before but rose to 94th this year. Hopefully, our ranking will improve next year when PLDT’s promise start to realize. The company will be allotting a budget of 11 billion pesos in the next two years to be able to provide fiber optic-enabled internet service to Filipinos. They also promised that 1.3 million PLDT subscribers will be able to experience the upgrade with their upcoming new one million ports.
And before the year ends, four million more homes will be able to avail their improved services using hybrid fiber technologies according to Entrepreneur.com.ph. “We are complementing this LTE rollout with our deployment of ultra-fast Smart WiFi, which registers 100 Mbps download and upload speed and is now available at key airports, other transport hubs, popular food parks, bars and restaurants as part of our Smart Spots Program all over the country,” said Oscar Reyes Jr., the PLDT & Smart FVP & Consumer Business for Market Development Head.
In addition to the announcement, the event also introduced new celebrity endorsers of the company, namely Kris Aquino and Vic Sotto. With them are the current endorsers of the company that includes Maxine Medina, Pia Wurtzbach, Jericho Rosales, Tweetie De Leon Gonzales, Franco Laurel and siblings Camille Pratts and John Pratts with wife Isabel Oli-Pratts.
